Abbey Kessler, MCM, L.Ac.

Abbey is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist. She has experience treating a wide range of conditions, with a special focus on supporting mental health and relieving chronic pain. She works with patients of all ages and draws on a trauma-informed care model, offering compassionate treatment that supports each person’s unique healing process.

APPROACH

Abbey’s approach reflects the Traditional Chinese Medicine view that mental, emotional, and physical health are deeply interconnected. She tailors treatments using acupuncture, herbal medicine, and Chinese food therapy, and provides resources for mindfulness-based practices for patients interested in supporting nervous system regulation outside of sessions. Abbey’s perspective is guided by the Classical Chinese concept of ren shu, or “compassionate art.” From a medical standpoint, this emphasizes the importance of cultivating a therapeutic relationship grounded in authentic care and compassion. Healing, she understands, is not only about technical skill but also about the connection between practitioner and patient. Abbey’s natural curiosity, together with her belief in the importance of giving patients the time and safe space to discuss their health concerns, creates an environment of trust that is essential for healing to unfold.

CLINICAL INTERESTS

Abbey has a particular interest in examining acupuncture’s effectiveness through a modern medical lens, including how current research helps explain its mechanisms of action. She is also drawn to the study of the feedback loop between chronic pain and mental health, exploring how each influences the other and how acupuncture can help interrupt this cycle.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Abbey earned a Master’s of Chinese Medicine degree from Northwestern Health Sciences University. Her professional experience includes internships at St. Francis Regional Medical Center; Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Center, where she provided acupuncture and adjunctive treatments to patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury in a community setting; and Salvation Army Harbor Lights, where she provided acupuncture to the community in an adult outreach and housing facility. She has completed advanced training through Acupuncturists Without Borders, with a focus on trauma-informed care and protocols for supporting patients experiencing emotional trauma.

PERSONAL

Abbey considers herself a lifelong learner and a bit of a nerd when it comes to discovering new ways to support the nervous system and overall well-being—a passion she enjoys sharing with others. Her approach with patients is shaped by her own experiences with chronic health concerns and her journey along the path to healing. In her free time, she finds joy in painting, making her own herbal medicine, taking long walks while identifying native plants, and listening to podcasts. She considers Taos, New Mexico, to be heaven on earth, a place that inspires connection to the natural environment, and renewal.
